Root Canals Are Not Painful Anymore: The Truth About Modern RCT

The words "root canal" cause more patient anxiety than almost any other dental procedure — yet the truth is the complete opposite of what most people fear. A root canal does not cause pain. It removes pain. With modern rotary endodontic instruments and effective local anaesthesia, the procedure is no more uncomfortable than a routine tooth filling.

Did You Know?

Modern rotary endodontics utilizes flexible nickel-titanium tools to clean infected root canals up to 3x faster and far more quietly than traditional hand files.

Why Does a Tooth Need Root Canal Treatment?

Below your tooth's outer enamel and dentine is a soft inner chamber called the pulp, which contains nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissue. When deep tooth decay, a crack, or repeated dental work allows bacteria to reach and infect this pulp, the result is intense, throbbing pain. Root Canal Treatment (RCT) removes this infected pulp, thoroughly cleans and disinfects the canals inside the root, and seals them permanently — allowing you to keep your natural tooth.

What is Rotary Endodontics?

Traditional root canals used stainless-steel hand files — a slow, manually intensive process. Modern rotary endodontics uses an electrically-powered handpiece with flexible nickel-titanium (NiTi) files. NiTi is significantly more flexible than stainless steel, navigating the natural curves of root canals far more accurately.

  • Faster treatment: Motorized action cleans canals in a fraction of the time of manual filing.
  • More thorough cleaning: Flexible NiTi files reach the full length and curves of the canal, reducing risk of residual infection.
  • Less post-procedure discomfort: Smoother cutting action means less trauma to surrounding tissues.
  • Quieter procedure: Many patients find the electric handpiece far less distressing than older methods.

"Preserving your natural tooth structure is always our priority. There is no perfect replacement for it."

How Many Sittings Does RCT Take?

For most cases, modern rotary RCT is completed in 2-3 sittings depending upon the level of infection. Front teeth (incisors and canines), with a single, relatively straight canal, can often be completed in fewer visits. Molars (back teeth), with 3 or 4 canals and more complex anatomy, typically require 2-3 sittings.

What Does Root Canal Treatment Cost in Lucknow?

  • Front teeth (incisors/canines): Approximately ₹2,500 – ₹3,000 per tooth.
  • Back teeth (premolars/molars): Approximately ₹3,000 – ₹3,500 per tooth, due to multiple canals.
  • Important: The cost of a protective dental crown (cap) placed after RCT is almost always quoted separately, ranging from ₹2,000 to ₹20,000 depending on material (PFM or zirconia). For molars, a crown is clinically essential to prevent the now-brittle tooth from fracturing.

What Happens if You Delay or Avoid It?

Leaving an infected tooth untreated allows the infection to spread to surrounding bone and neighbouring teeth. In advanced cases, a dental abscess forms — which can cause facial swelling and become a serious health concern. Saving a natural tooth is always preferable to extraction — a tooth lost to avoidable infection will ultimately cost far more to replace with an implant or bridge.

After Your Root Canal Treatment

Your treated tooth may feel mildly sore for 2 to 3 days — a normal inflammatory response. Over-the-counter pain relief (as recommended by your dentist) is usually sufficient. Avoid chewing hard food on that side until the final crown is placed. Once crowned, a properly treated tooth can last a lifetime with regular dental check-ups.

At M.A. Dental Clinic in Rajajipuram, Lucknow, we use rotary endodontic instruments and apex locators to ensure the highest accuracy and your complete comfort throughout the procedure. If you are experiencing tooth pain, do not delay — early treatment means simpler, more affordable care.
